It shares boundaries with Ogbadibo to the west, Otukpo to the north, and Ado to the east, while also bordering Enugu State to the south. The terrain consists largely of tropical savannah vegetation with fertile plains. The administrative headquarters is located in the town of Okpoga, which serves as a central point for the surrounding districts.
Economy and Trade
The local economy is predominantly driven by agriculture, with the area being a major producer of yams, cassava, maize, and palm oil. Trading of these agricultural commodities occurs in local markets that serve surrounding communities and support inter-town and some inter-state trade. Ugbokolo, one of the most prominent towns in the LGA, serves as a significant commercial and educational center. The presence of the Benue State Polytechnic in Ugbokolo provides a boost to small-scale businesses and the local service industry.
People and Culture
Okpokwu is primarily inhabited by the Idoma ethnic group, whose cultural practices are deeply rooted in traditional values and ancestral heritage. The LGA is divided into various districts including Edumoga, Okpoga, and Ichama, each with its own traditional leadership structure that works alongside the modern local government council. Social life is often centered around communal festivals, traditional music, and the Alekwu spirit cult which plays a role in local belief systems. Christian missions have also historically influenced the educational and social development of the region.
