Geography and Location
Ohimini is situated in the southern region of Benue State, sharing boundaries with Otukpo Local Government Area and Okpokwu. The landscape is characterized by lush Guinea Savannah vegetation and fertile plains. The area is named after the Ohimini River, which provides a natural drainage system for the surrounding farmland.
Historical Context
The local government was officially created in 1996 by the Federal Military Government under General Sani Abacha. It was carved out of the existing Otukpo Local Government Area to bring administration closer to the grassroots. Historically, the area consists of several ancient Idoma clans that have long-standing cultural and political ties. The administrative center at Idekpa has since developed into a significant focal point for local development.
Economy and Agriculture
Agriculture is the mainstay of the Ohimini economy, with crops such as yam, cassava, maize, and rice being the primary produce. Palm oil production also contributes to the local income due to the abundance of oil palm trees in the southern districts. Small-scale commerce thrives in periodic markets where farmers trade their produce for manufactured goods.
Culture and Governance
The people of Ohimini are predominantly Idoma, and the Idoma language is the primary medium of communication alongside English. Cultural life is anchored in traditional festivals, masquerade displays, and the preservation of ancestral lineages. Governance is conducted through a dual system involving the formal local government council and the traditional institution led by district heads. These traditional rulers are part of the Idoma Area Traditional Council, which is presided over by the Och'Idoma in Otukpo.
