Geography and Location
Makurdi is strategically located in the Middle Belt of Nigeria, positioned on the banks of the Benue River, which serves as a major geographic feature dividing the town into North and South banks. The landscape is primarily flat savanna, facilitating both urban development and extensive agricultural activities in the surrounding outskirts. It serves as a vital transportation node, connecting the northern and southern regions of Nigeria through its road and rail networks. The Makurdi Bridge remains one of the most significant engineering landmarks over the Benue River.
History and Administration
Makurdi developed into an important colonial town and river/rail transport center in the early 20th century, though the area had earlier settlements before that period. It was designated the capital of Benue State following the state's creation in 1976 from the former Benue-Plateau State. As an LGA, Makurdi is subdivided into several administrative wards, including North Bank I, North Bank II, and Modern Market. It serves as the seat of the Benue State Government, housing the Government House and various federal and state ministries.
Economy and Infrastructure
The local economy is centered on civil service, commerce, and subsistence and commercial agriculture, aligned with the state's identity as the 'Food Basket of the Nation.' Major trade items include yams, maize, and rice, which are distributed to various parts of the country from the city's markets. Infrastructure in the area includes the Makurdi Airport, which is a significant Nigerian Air Force base, and a station on the Eastern Railway line. The Benue River also provides opportunities for local fishing and small-scale water transport.
Education and Culture
Makurdi is a major educational hub in North-Central Nigeria, hosting the Benue State University and the Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, formerly the Federal University of Agriculture. The cultural fabric of the area is predominantly influenced by the Tiv people, although it is a cosmopolitan center with significant Idoma, Igede, and Hausa populations. Annual cultural displays and traditional festivals highlight the rich heritage of the Benue valley. The city's social life is often centered around the riverfront, which serves as a popular location for recreation and social gatherings.
