History and Administration

Vandeikya Local Government Area was established in 1989. It emerged from the former Gboko administrative division to bring governance closer to the Kunav people, a major sub-group of the Tiv ethnic nation. The LGA is governed by a local government council consisting of an executive chairman and several councillors representing various wards. Throughout its history, it has served as a critical political and administrative hub in the eastern part of Benue State.

Geographically, Vandeikya is situated in the eastern region of Benue State, sharing borders with Cross River State to the south, Kwande LGA to the east, Ushongo LGA to the north, and Konshisha LGA to the west. The terrain is characterized by fertile undulating plains and a network of small streams that support year-round farming. The region experiences a tropical savannah climate with a distinct rainy season from April to October and a dry season from November to March. Vandeikya has a tropical wet-and-dry climate typical of the Benue-Cross River border region.

Economy and Trade

The economy of Vandeikya is heavily reliant on agriculture, which employs the vast majority of its population. The area is a major producer of food and cash crops, including yams, cassava, rice, and soy beans, which are exported to other parts of Nigeria. It is particularly noted for its high output of citrus fruits, benefiting from the area's favorable soil and climate. Local markets in Vandeikya serve as vital trade centers where farmers from surrounding villages sell their produce to wholesalers from northern and southern Nigeria.
