Historical Context and Establishment
The Lekki Conservation Centre (LCC) was established in 1990 by the Nigerian Conservation Foundation to serve as a beacon of nature conservation within the rapidly urbanizing Lekki Peninsula. The project was launched with technical and financial support from Chevron Nigeria Limited to preserve the biodiversity of the Lagos coastline. Since its inception, it has become one of Lagos’s best-known urban nature reserves. It serves as the flagship project for the NCF, advocating for environmental sustainability in Nigeria. The centre remains a critical green lung for the city of Lagos, providing a necessary counterpoint to industrial expansion.
Flora and Fauna
The reserve spans a mosaic of vegetation types including secondary forests, swamp forests, and savannah grasslands. This diverse habitat supports a wide variety of wildlife such as mona monkeys, crocodiles, monitor lizards, and many species of birds. The vegetation includes raffia palms, which are characteristic of the Nigerian coastal belt. It provides a rare sanctuary for these species amidst the surrounding concrete sprawl of the Lekki corridor. Conservationists use the site to monitor local biodiversity trends and protect endangered coastal plant species.
The Canopy Walkway and Tourism
In 2015, the centre commissioned a 401-metre-long canopy walkway, which is widely advertised by the Nigerian Conservation Foundation as one of the longest canopy walkways in Africa. This engineering feat allows visitors to experience the forest from an elevated perspective, reaching heights of up to 22.5 metres above the ground. The walkway has transformed the centre into a popular tourist and recreation site in Lagos. It features six towers that provide panoramic views of the reserve and the Lagos skyline. This attraction helps generate tourism revenue that supports the centre's operations.
Environmental Education and Research
Beyond its role as a tourist site, the LCC is a vital centre for environmental education and ecological research. It regularly hosts school visits and educational excursions designed to instill a sense of environmental responsibility in the younger generation. The facility provides specialized environmental education resources and infrastructure dedicated to Nigerian wildlife and habitat management. The centre supports environmental education and conservation awareness activities, utilizing its undisturbed plots to promote ecological research.
