Historical Background

Hugh Jones, a Scottish rancher, is widely credited with bringing the plateau to wider government attention for ranch development in 1949. He established the Obudu Cattle Ranch in 1951 alongside collaborators such as Dr. Crawfeild, developing the area for agricultural and pastoral purposes due to its cool climate. In later years, the Cross River State government took control and repurposed the site into a leisure and holiday destination. Major infrastructure upgrades were completed during the early 2000s to modernize the facilities and transition the site from a ranch to a mountain resort.

Geography and Climate

Situated on the Oshie Ridge of the Sankwala Mountains, the resort features a unique highland ecosystem that differs from Nigeria's typical tropical weather. The high altitude results in a semi-temperate climate with temperatures rarely exceeding 25 degrees Celsius. Frequent mist and low-hanging clouds are common, giving the landscape a distinct aesthetic. The terrain consists of rolling grasslands, deep canyons, and ancient sub-tropical forests rich in biodiversity.

Infrastructure and Tourism

A defining feature of the resort is its approximately 4-kilometer cable car system, which was historically promoted as one of the longest in Africa, although it has been reported as non-operational for extended periods in recent years. Visitors can also explore the Becheve Nature Reserve, which contains a variety of rare bird species and a wooden canopy walkway. The 'Holy Mountain' provides a panoramic view of the surrounding peaks and valleys stretching towards the Cameroon border. Accommodation options include chalets and villas designed to blend into the natural mountain environment.

Sports and Cultural Significance

For many years, the resort hosted the Obudu Ranch International Mountain Race, an annual event recognized by the World Mountain Running Association. This competition attracted elite long-distance runners from across the globe and significantly boosted the region's international profile. Locally, the resort is a vital economic hub for the people of Obanliku, providing employment and supporting local agriculture. It remains an important destination for natural beauty and eco-tourism in Nigeria.
