Orelope is deeply rooted in the history of the Oyo Empire, particularly through its headquarters, Igboho. During the 16th century, Igboho served as the seat of power for four successive Alaafins - Egunoju, Orompoto, Ajiboyede, and Abipa - while the capital of Old Oyo was under threat. The town is home to the royal burial sites of these monarchs, making it a site of immense cultural and historical importance. This period of residency earned the town significant prestige, often referred to in historical texts as a fortified sanctuary for the Yoruba monarchy.

Geographically situated in the northern part of Oyo State within the Oke-Ogun region, Orelope occupies an area of roughly 956 square kilometers. It shares administrative boundaries with Irepo Local Government to the north, Olorunsogo to the east, and Saki East to the south.
