Geography and Administration
Afijio Local Government Area is situated in the central region of Oyo State, Nigeria. Its administrative headquarters is located in the town of Jobele. The LGA was carved out of the old Oyo Local Government in 1989 to bring governance closer to the grassroots. It covers an estimated land area of 722 square kilometres and shares boundaries with Oyo East, Oyo West, and Akinyele Local Government Areas. The region features a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons, providing a highly favourable environment for vegetation and human settlement.
Economy and Agriculture
The economy of Afijio is primarily agrarian. Agriculture is a major part of the local economy, with residents engaged in crop farming and livestock rearing. Farmers in the area cultivate a wide variety of food crops, including cassava, maize, yams, and vegetables, alongside cash crops such as cashew and oil palm. In addition to crop farming, many residents engage in poultry farming, animal husbandry, and artisanal food processing. Local markets thrive on the trading of these agricultural commodities, attracting buyers from neighbouring cities. Small-scale manufacturing, traditional crafts, and retail commerce also contribute significantly to the local socio-economic landscape.
Culture and Society
Afijio is predominantly inhabited by the Yoruba people, who maintain deep-rooted cultural and historical ties to the ancient Oyo Empire. The local government area comprises several major settlements, including Awe, Fiditi, Ilora, Jobele, Imini, and Akinmorin. The communities within the LGA are deeply traditional, celebrating numerous festivals that mark planting seasons, historical milestones, and religious events. Christianity and Islam are the widely practiced religions, existing harmoniously alongside indigenous belief systems. Furthermore, community development associations and local educational institutions play active roles in the continued socio-cultural advancement of the area.
