Ibadan North-East Local Government Area was formally created on the 27th of August 1991 by the federal military administration. It was carved out of the defunct Ibadan Municipal Government, which was divided to bring governance closer to the rapidly expanding urban population. The administrative headquarters is situated at Iwo Road, serving as the bureaucratic centre for local policies. The municipality is divided into twelve distinct political wards, which help facilitate grassroots administration, electoral processes, and community development within the metropolis.

Situated within the central and eastern portions of the greater Ibadan urban expanse, the local government area covers a densely populated territory. It shares boundaries with other major municipal areas, including Ibadan North, Ibadan South-East, and Egbeda.
