Ido Local Government Area is situated in the south-western part of Oyo State, Nigeria. It spans a landmass of approximately 986 square kilometres, making it one of the more expansive administrative divisions in the state. The area shares boundaries with Akinyele, Ibarapa East, Oluyole, and several Ibadan metropolitan local governments, as well as bordering Ogun State to the south. The terrain consists largely of tropical savannah and secondary forests, providing fertile grounds for various flora and fauna. Its proximity to the capital city of Ibadan has led to rapid urban sprawl expanding into its eastern borders.
History and Administration
Ido Local Government Area was formally created in May 1989 under the administration of the Nigerian military government. Prior to its establishment, the territory was administered as part of the larger Akinyele Local Government Area. The administrative headquarters is located in the town of Ido, which serves as the political and bureaucratic centre for the region. The area is divided into multiple political wards to facilitate grassroots governance, resource distribution, and electoral representation. Traditional leadership also plays a vital role, with various Baales (local chiefs) overseeing the numerous towns and villages under the customary authority of the Olubadan of Ibadan.
