Geography and Location

Ibarapa North Local Government Area is situated in the western geopolitical zone of Oyo State, Nigeria. It shares boundaries with the Republic of Benin to the west and Ogun State to the south, while bordering other local governments within the Ibarapa region to the east. The terrain is characterised by a mix of derived savannah and tropical forest, providing a suitable environment for extensive agricultural activities. The climate features distinct wet and dry seasons that are typical of the southwestern Nigerian ecological zone.

History and Administration

The local government was officially created in 1996 during the military administration of General Sani Abacha. It was carved out of the defunct Ifeloju Local Government Area in an effort to bring political administration and development closer to the grassroots. Its administrative headquarters is located in the town of Ayete, which serves as the bureaucratic centre for the region. Ibarapa North comprises several electoral wards and encompasses culturally significant historical settlements, most notably Tapa and Igangan.

Economy and Culture

The economy of Ibarapa North is predominantly agrarian, with the vast majority of the population actively engaged in farming, hunting, and local trade. Major food and cash crops cultivated in the area include cassava, maize, yam, plantain, and melon, which consistently supply both local markets and neighbouring urban centres. The residents are primarily of the Yoruba ethnic group, speaking the distinct Ibarapa dialect of the Yoruba language.
