Geography and Location
Baure Local Government Area is situated in the extreme northern reaches of Katsina State, bordering the Republic of Niger to the north. It shares domestic boundaries with Zango Local Government Area to the west and Sandamu to the south. The landscape is primarily defined by the Sahel savanna, featuring relatively flat terrain with sparse vegetation and sandy soils. The region experiences a tropical continental climate, characterized by a long dry season and a brief, intense rainy period.
Economic Activities
The economy of Baure is predominantly agrarian, with the majority of the population engaged in farming and animal husbandry. Major food and cash crops produced in the area include millet, guinea corn, groundnuts, and beans. Livestock trade is also a significant economic driver, as the local markets facilitate the sale of cattle, goats, and sheep. Due to its proximity to the international border, the area serves as a transit point for various commercial goods entering and leaving the country.
History and Administration
Baure was officially created as a distinct Local Government Area in 1996 during local government reforms under the military administration of General Sani Abacha. It was carved out of the former Zango Local Government Area to bring governance closer to the growing population in the northern frontier. The LGA is divided into several administrative wards, including Baure, Garki, Hui, and Muduri. Administration is overseen by a local government council which handles public services, local infrastructure, and community development.
