Geography and Location
Zango Local Government Area is situated along the Nigeria–Niger border in northern Katsina State, sharing an international boundary with the Republic of Niger to the north. It is bordered by the local government areas of Baure to the east and Daura to the west. The landscape is characterized by the Sudano-Sahelian savanna, featuring vast plains and seasonal watercourses. The climate is predominantly semi-arid, with a distinct short rainy season and a long dry season often influenced by the Harmattan winds.
Economy and Trade
The economy of Zango is primarily driven by subsistence and commercial agriculture, with the majority of the population engaged in farming and animal husbandry. Key crops cultivated in the region include millet, sorghum, cowpeas, and groundnuts, which are suited to the dry northern climate. Due to its proximity to the international border, the area also facilitates cross-border trade between Nigeria and Niger. Livestock markets in the region are significant, serving as centers for the sale of cattle, sheep, and goats.
Administration and Culture
Administratively, Zango is divided into several wards and is governed by a local government council headquartered in the town of Zango. Historically and culturally, the area is an integral part of the Daura Emirate, one of the oldest traditional states in Hausaland. The population is predominantly Hausa and Fulani, following Islamic traditions and customs. The community participates in the broader cultural traditions of the Daura Emirate, which include periodic festivals and the ceremonial horse riding displays known as Durbar.
