Their rich cultural heritage is celebrated through annual new yam festivals, traditional wrestling competitions, and vibrant masquerade displays that mark various agricultural seasons. In modern history, Etche is noted for the 1990 Umuechem massacre. This pivotal event, sparked by local protests against oil pollution and infrastructural neglect, tragically resulted in significant destruction and drew early international attention to environmental justice issues within the Niger Delta.
