Geography and Administration
Khana is a prominent Local Government Area located in the eastern part of Rivers State within the Niger Delta region. Its administrative headquarters is situated in Bori, which is widely recognised as the commercial and cultural capital of the broader Ogoniland. The LGA shares boundaries with several other local governments, including Gokana, Tai, and Andoni, as well as neighbouring Akwa Ibom State. It is divided into numerous towns and autonomous communities, including Zaakpon, Bane, Kono, and Babbe. These communities are organised under traditional rulership structures that operate alongside the elected local government council.
Economy and Environment
The traditional economy of Khana is heavily reliant on agriculture and fishing, driven by the area's fertile arable land and network of waterways. Local farmers primarily cultivate crops such as cassava, yams, plantains, and oil palm for both subsistence and commercial trade. Like many parts of Ogoniland, Khana has a history of extensive crude oil extraction, which has significantly altered the local economic landscape. Decades of oil spills and environmental degradation have severely affected the farming and fishing livelihoods of the indigenous population. Consequently, the area is frequently included in national and international environmental remediation programmes aimed at restoring the ecological balance of the region.

Khana is predominantly inhabited by the Ogoni people, who speak the Kana language, one of the major linguistic groups in Rivers State. The area boasts a rich cultural heritage, which is celebrated through vibrant annual festivals, traditional wrestling matches, and elaborate masquerade displays. Bori, the headquarters, serves as a bustling educational and commercial hub that hosts the Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, drawing students from across the country. The region is also historically significant for its central role in Nigeria's environmental and minority rights movements. It was the birthplace of several prominent activists, including the late Ken Saro-Wiwa, whose legacy continues to shape the civic and political identity of the Khana people.
