Geography and Location
Port Harcourt Local Government Area is situated in southern Nigeria within Rivers State, located in the coastal belt of the Niger Delta region. It covers the core, historic areas of the Port Harcourt metropolis, bordered by the Obio-Akpor Local Government Area to the north, Okrika Local Government Area to the east, and various tidal inlets and creeks bordering neighboring districts to the south and west. The terrain is predominantly flat, featuring a network of rivers, creeks, and estuarine swamps characteristic of the region. As the administrative capital of Rivers State, it serves as the geographical and political nucleus of the broader urban area.
History and Administration
The city of Port Harcourt was established in 1912 by the British colonial government primarily to export coal discovered in Enugu. It was formally named in 1913 after Lewis Vernon Harcourt, the British Secretary of State for the Colonies at the time. The Local Government Area was later created to administer the densely populated inner-city wards, including historic neighbourhoods such as Diobu, Borokiri, and the original Port Harcourt Township. Today, the local council is responsible for municipal services, public health, and basic infrastructure maintenance within these core districts.
