Local tradition and historical narratives such as the Kano Chronicle portray Gaya as one of the region's ancient settlements and associate it with the early founders of Kano, pre-dating the establishment of the ancient Kano city walls. In regional folklore, Gaya is closely associated with the Bayajidda legend, being the town where the mythical hero reportedly had his legendary knife forged by local blacksmiths before travelling to Daura. Gaya became the seat of a newly created emirate in 2019, but the emirate structure was later changed by the Kano State government and became subject to legal and political dispute; its status should be verified against current official sources.
