The Federal Ministry of Works plans, constructs and maintains federal highways and bridges, sets engineering standards, and supervises major civil works that connect states and key economic corridors.
It supervises the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) interface, the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute, and federal highway zones across the country. It also administers the Highway Manual and Procurement of Engineering Services regulations.
Current priorities include the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, the Sokoto–Badagry Super Highway, the Second Niger Bridge access roads, rehabilitation of the Lagos–Ibadan and Abuja–Kano expressways, expanded use of concrete pavement on critical corridors, the Highway Development and Management Initiative for tolling and maintenance concessions, and tighter axle-load enforcement to extend road life.

Leads policy on environmental protection, climate response and biodiversity through NESREA, NOSDRA, HYPREP, the National Park Service and Nigeria's Climate Change Department.

Regulates mining, licensing and geological surveys through the Mining Cadastre Office, the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency, the Solid Minerals Development Fund and the Mines Inspectorate Department.

Oversees public health, hospitals and drug regulation through NPHCDA, NCDC, NAFDAC, NHIA and NACA, anchoring the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative.

Administers Abuja and the FCT under section 299 of the Constitution, exercising state-level powers over land, planning and municipal services through the FCTA, FCDA and AGIS.
