The Federal Ministry of Police Affairs provides civilian policy oversight for the Nigeria Police Force, coordinates welfare and reform initiatives, and manages the federal interface with state and community policing structures.
It works alongside the Nigeria Police Force, the Police Service Commission (which handles appointments and discipline), the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, the Police Pensions Office, and the Nigerian Police Academy in Wudil. It also coordinates with the Office of the Inspector-General of Police on operational priorities.
Strategic priorities include implementation of the Police Act 2020, expansion of the Police Trust Fund's equipment and welfare programmes, recruitment and re-training of officers, the rollout of the Nigerian Police community-policing initiative, accelerated digitisation of crime records, and dialogue with state governments on the constitutional question of state police.
