The Federal Ministry of Transportation coordinates national policy for road, rail, inland waterways and intermodal transport, including safety, infrastructure, and integration with Nigeria's logistics corridors.
It supervises the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology in Zaria, the Maritime Academy interface, the Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria, and joint oversight with relevant ministries on the Federal Road Safety Corps where transport policy intersects.
Current priorities include completion of the Lagos–Ibadan, Abuja–Kaduna and Warri–Itakpe rail corridors and extension to Kano, Maiduguri and Port Harcourt; the Lagos–Calabar coastal rail; revival of inland waterways for cargo; standardised vehicle inspection through VIO reforms; and a national transport policy linking ports, rail and roads under the One Logistics Corridor concept.
