The Federal Ministry of Defence directs national defence policy, oversees procurement and welfare for the Nigerian Armed Forces, and coordinates with the service chiefs and the National Security Adviser on the country's security architecture.
It supervises the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Air Force, the Defence Headquarters, the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), the Defence Intelligence Agency, the National Defence College and Nigerian Defence Academy.
Strategic priorities include sustained operations against insurgency in the North-East, banditry in the North-West, and separatist violence in the South-East; modernisation of platforms and indigenous defence manufacturing through DICON; troop welfare reforms; and contributions to ECOWAS and African Union peacekeeping mandates.

Administers Abuja and the FCT under section 299 of the Constitution, exercising state-level powers over land, planning and municipal services through the FCTA, FCDA and AGIS.
