The Federal Ministry of Education sets national policy for basic, secondary, technical and tertiary education, teacher development, curriculum standards, and literacy programmes across the federation.
It supervises the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), the National Universities Commission (NUC), the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), JAMB, NECO, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), and the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council.
Current priorities include rollout of the Nigerian Education Sector Renewal Initiative, expansion of student loans through NELFUND, the new 12-year basic-education structure, technical and vocational education reform, the Skill Up Artisan (SUPA) programme, and implementation of the National Policy on Open and Distance Learning.

Manages dams, river basins, irrigation and national water-supply policy through the twelve River Basin Development Authorities, the National Water Resources Institute and the Clean Nigeria sanitation campaign.

Designs programmes for youth skills, employment and civic engagement, supervising the NYSC, the Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre and the Nigerian Youth Investment Fund.

Provides policy direction for the Immigration Service, Correctional Service, NSCDC, the Federal Fire Service and the Citizenship and Business Department, including marriage and naturalisation.
