Mandate

The Federal Ministry of Power drives policy for electricity generation, transmission and distribution, rural electrification, renewable energy uptake, and reforms across the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry value chain.

It supervises the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) interface, the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET), the Niger Delta Power Holding Company, and the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria.

Current priorities include implementation of the Electricity Act 2023 enabling state electricity markets, the Presidential Power Initiative with Siemens to expand grid capacity, the Nigeria Electrification Project for solar mini-grids, gas-to-power supply assurance, transmission upgrades to handle over 13,000 MW of evacuation, and tariff reforms to make the sector financially viable while protecting vulnerable customers.
