The Federal Ministry of Environment leads policy on environmental protection, climate change response, biodiversity, pollution control, conservation, and Nigeria's compliance with international environmental treaties.
It supervises the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), the National Park Service, and the Climate Change Department.
Strategic priorities include implementation of the Climate Change Act, delivery of Nigeria's Nationally Determined Contributions and 2060 net-zero target, the Great Green Wall against desertification in 11 frontline northern states, the Ogoni clean-up under HYPREP, plastic-waste regulation, and a just energy-transition plan that protects vulnerable communities.
