The Kontagora Emirate was founded by Umaru Nagwamatse, a Nupe-Fulani military leader and prince associated with the Sokoto Caliphate's sphere of influence, in the mid-19th century, with its establishment commonly dated to approximately 1858. The town emerged in the mid-19th century as a frontier emirate under Sokoto influence during the broader era of caliphate expansion. It remains the seat of the Kontagora Emirate, with the traditional ruler holding the title of Sarkin Sudan. The area's history is deeply intertwined with the socio-political development of the North-Central region of Nigeria.

Situated in the north-western part of Niger State, Kontagora occupies a strategic position along the Kontagora River.
