History and Administration
Ogoja has a profound administrative history, having served as an important administrative center within the old Ogoja Province and Division during the colonial and early post-colonial eras. The Ogoja area was historically part of the old Ogoja Province/Division, from which several present-day administrative areas in northern Cross River later emerged. Today, Ogoja town remains a major regional hub within northern Cross River. Its headquarters is located in Ogoja town, and the Igoli neighborhood is an important commercial area in Ogoja town.
Geography and Settlements
Located in the northern part of Cross River State, Ogoja shares boundaries with Yala, Bekwarra, Boki, and Ikom LGAs. The area has generally arable land that supports farming, especially smallholder cultivation of staples such as yam, cassava, and rice. The LGA is home to several major peoples, clans, and communities, including the Ekajuk, Mbube, Nkum, Nnam, and Ishibori. These settlements are interconnected by a network of roads that link the northern parts of the state to the Middle Belt region of Nigeria.
Economy and Infrastructure
The economy of Ogoja is predominantly agrarian, with a high volume of trade in yams, rice, and cassava produced for both local consumption and export to other states.
