Dunukofia is situated in the central region of Anambra State, bordered by Oyi to the north and Njikoka to the south. It is characterized by its relatively small landmass compared to other local government areas in the state. The area is well-connected by road networks to nearby trunk routes, including the Onitsha-Enugu corridor. The landscape lies within the rainforest and derived-savanna transition zone typical of southeastern Nigeria.
Historical Context
According to local oral tradition, the local government area is named after Dunukofia, a figure in Igbo history believed to be the progenitor of the six constituent communities. This shared heritage maintains that Dunukofia had sons who migrated and founded the towns of Ukpo, Ifitedunu, Umunnachi, Umudioka, Ukwulu, and Nawgu. This shared ancestral heritage fosters a strong sense of cultural unity and kinship among the inhabitants. The administrative unit was officially created to enhance local governance and bring government services closer to the grassroots.
