Geography and Location
Ayamelum is situated in the northernmost part of Anambra State and shares boundaries with Kogi and Enugu States. The terrain is characterized by lowlands and fertile plains, largely influenced by the proximity of the Anambra River and its various tributaries. This geographical positioning makes the area prone to seasonal flooding but also provides the rich alluvial soil necessary for diverse crop cultivation. The LGA serves as a vital transition zone between the riverine basin and the inland plains of southeastern Nigeria.
Economy and Agriculture
Ayamelum is an important agricultural LGA in Anambra State, known especially for rice farming. Its economy is fundamentally rooted in agrarian activities and is supported by significant irrigation infrastructure such as the Lower Anambra Irrigation Project. In addition to rice, residents engage extensively in the cultivation of yams, cassava, and maize, as well as commercial fishing along the river banks. Local markets in towns like Omor and Anaku serve as critical trade points for bulk agricultural produce sold to neighboring states.
Administrative Structure and Settlements
The local government area comprises eight primary autonomous communities: Anaku, Omor, Igbakwu, Ifite-Ogwari, Umueje, Omasi, Umumbo, and Umuerum. Anaku serves as the administrative headquarters where the local government council secretariat is situated. Each community maintains a traditional leadership system, usually headed by a traditional ruler known as an Igwe, who serves as the custodian of culture and local harmony. The administrative focus of the LGA typically revolves around rural infrastructure development and the management of large-scale agricultural programs.
