Geography and Location

Yewa South is situated in the western part of Ogun State and shares an international boundary with the Republic of Benin to its west. It is bordered by Yewa North to the north, Ipokia to the south, and the Ado-Odo/Ota local government area to the east and southeast. The landscape is characterized by tropical rainforest and savannah transitions, featuring fertile soil that supports a wide range of agricultural activities. Its proximity to the Benin border supports cross-border trade and commerce.

Historical Background

The local government was formerly known as Egbado South until 1995, when the name was changed to Yewa South following a petition by the indigenous people to better reflect their cultural identity. The change from 'Egbado' to 'Yewa' was rooted in a desire to identify with the Yewa River that flows through the region and reflected the people's preference for this indigenous name over the exonym 'Egbado'. Ilaro, the administrative seat, has long served as a prominent center for the Yewa people and was a key strategic point during 19th-century regional conflicts. The Olu of Ilaro is a leading traditional ruler in Yewaland, holding significant traditional authority in the region.

Economy and Trade

The primary economic stay of Yewa South is agriculture, with both food and cash crops produced in large quantities. Major crops include cocoa, kola nut, palm oil, cassava, and maize, which are traded in local markets and exported to neighboring states. Due to its border location, international trade and commercial activities are major drivers of the local economy, particularly in settlements like Owode Yewa. While the area benefits from the natural resources of the Ogun West district, the local economy is mainly driven by agriculture, trade, and services, as the region's major construction-material industries are primarily concentrated in nearby Ewekoro and Yewa North.

Culture and Education

The cultural life of Yewa South is marked by vibrant festivals and traditional Yoruba customs, most notably the Oronna Ilaro Festival, which commemorates the legendary warrior Oronna. Traditional arts such as Gelede and Egungun masquerades are also prominent features of the community's heritage. In terms of education, the local government is home to the Federal Polytechnic Ilaro, a well-known federal polytechnic in Nigeria. This presence has made Ilaro an educational hub, attracting students from across the country and fostering a lively academic and social environment.
