Surulere is centrally situated on the Lagos Mainland, covering a land area of approximately 23 square kilometres. It borders parts of the Lagos Mainland and Mushin areas, alongside other adjoining districts, making it a pivotal connector between Lagos Island and the broader mainland areas. The terrain is predominantly flat, characteristic of the coastal plains of Lagos State. The name 'Surulere' translates to 'patience has its rewards' or 'patience is profitable' in the Yoruba language. It also participated in the broad cultural activity across Lagos during the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC '77).
