Geography and Location

Kosofe Local Government Area is situated in the northern part of Lagos State, acting as a major gateway into the metropolis. It shares boundaries with Ogun State to the north, Ikorodu to the east, Ikeja to the west, and Shomolu to the south and southwest. The area spans a mix of upland and riverine topographies, characterized by frontage along the Lagos Lagoon and various creeks, particularly around the Oworonshoki area. Its strategic location makes it a crucial transit corridor for people and goods entering Lagos via the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

History and Administration

Kosofe was officially created in 1996, during the military administration of General Sani Abacha. It was carved out of the old Somolu Local Government Area to bring governance closer to its rapidly expanding population. The administrative headquarters is located in Ogudu. Under the administrative arrangement of Lagos State, the area is subdivided into the Agboyi-Ketu and Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs); these are state-level administrative units that operate alongside the constitutionally recognized local government structure.

Economy and Commerce

The economy of Kosofe is heavily driven by commerce, informal trade, and transportation. It is nationally renowned for hosting the Mile 12 Market, which is a major wholesale food market and a primary hub for agricultural produce in Lagos and Nigeria. Additionally, the Ketu and Ojota areas serve as massive transport and trading hubs that sustain thousands of local businesses. The local government also accommodates several small to medium-scale enterprises, retail chains, and service sectors that cater to its densely populated residential zones.

Demographics and Settlements

Kosofe is one of the most populous local government areas in Lagos State, reflecting a diverse mix of ethnicities from across Nigeria. The original inhabitants are predominantly Yoruba, particularly the Awori subgroup, but the area now hosts a highly cosmopolitan population. Major residential districts range from the upscale Magodo Government Residential Area (GRA) to densely populated neighbourhoods like Oworonshoki, Ikosi, and the portions of Gbagada that fall within the LGA's boundaries. This blend of high-income and working-class settlements underscores the socioeconomic diversity of the municipality.
