Ikeja is centrally located within Lagos State, serving as both a local government area and the state's administrative capital. Situated in the heart of metropolitan Lagos, it shares boundaries with several other local government areas including Agege, Ifako-Ijaiye, Kosofe, Mushin, and Oshodi-Isolo. The local government area comprises several prominent neighbourhoods and districts, including Oregun, Allen Avenue, Opebi, Maryland, and the Government Residential Area (GRA). The administrative headquarters of the Lagos State Government, known as the Secretariat, is situated in the Alausa district of Ikeja. History and Culture
Originally settled by the Awori people, a subgroup of the Yoruba ethnic group, Ikeja has evolved from a quiet agricultural village into a bustling metropolis. Ikeja is historically associated with Awori settlement, but accounts of the origin of its name vary. Ikeja was designated as the capital of Lagos State upon its creation in 1967, with the new administration taking off in 1968, a status which spurred rapid urbanisation and infrastructural development. Today, it reflects a cosmopolitan culture, hosting a diverse population of Nigerians from various ethnic and religious backgrounds. The area is also known for its vibrant nightlife, historical landmarks, and the iconic Kalakuta Republic Museum established in honour of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti.
