Geography and Climate
Sardauna Local Government Area is situated in the southeastern corner of Taraba State, bordering the Republic of Cameroon. The region is dominated by the Mambilla Plateau, which sits at an average elevation of about 1,600 metres above sea level. Due to its high altitude, the area enjoys a unique, cooler highland climate characterized by cool temperatures, a long rainy season, and a distinct dry season. It is also home to Chappal Waddi, which is recognized as the highest peak in Nigeria.
Economy and Agriculture
The economy of Sardauna is primarily driven by agriculture and livestock rearing. It is one of the few places in Nigeria where highland crops are grown, with tea serving as the best-documented commercial highland crop in the area, especially around the Kakara Tea Estate. The vast grasslands of the plateau support significant cattle rearing and ranching within Taraba State and Nigeria. Additionally, the area possesses significant potential for hydroelectric power and eco-tourism.
Culture and Demographics
The local government area is ethnically diverse, inhabited by groups such as the Mambilla, Fulani, Kaka, Panso, and Kambu. These communities have coexisted for generations, sharing a history tied to the unique geography of the highland region. Traditional festivals and cultural practices are deeply influenced by the agrarian lifestyle and the historical migratory patterns of the various ethnic groups. Gembu, the administrative headquarters, serves as the central hub for cultural and economic exchange in the region.
