Geography and Location
Riyom Local Government Area is situated in the north-central part of Plateau State, bordering Jos South and Barkin Ladi LGAs to the east and Kaduna State to the west. The area is characterized by the high-altitude terrain typical of the Jos Plateau, resulting in a temperate-like climate throughout much of the year. Its most famous landmark is the Riyom Rock, a unique natural formation where stones are precariously balanced atop one another. The landscape consists of rolling hills and granite outcroppings that define the scenic beauty of the region.
Economy and Agriculture
The economy of Riyom is primarily driven by agrarian activities, taking advantage of the fertile volcanic soils and cool temperatures. It is an important Irish potato-growing area in Plateau State, while also producing maize, tomatoes, and various temperate vegetables. Beyond farming, the area has a significant history of artisanal mining, particularly for tin and columbite, which were historically vital to the regional economy. Small-scale commerce and cattle rearing also contribute to the local livelihood of the inhabitants.
Culture and Administration
Riyom serves as a central hub for the Berom people, who are the indigenous ethnic group and maintain a rich cultural heritage expressed through traditional festivals and music. The local government is divided into several administrative wards, with the headquarters located in Riyom town along the Jos-Abuja highway. Traditional leadership remains influential in the area, with the Dagwom Rwei of Riyom serving as the traditional ruler under the authority of the Gbong Gwom Jos. Social life is deeply rooted in communal values and the preservation of Berom customs.
