History and Administration
Ilesa West Local Government Area was created from the former Ilesa Local Government to improve administrative efficiency and bring governance closer to the people. It constitutes one half of the major Ilesa metropolis, alongside Ilesa East. The LGA is governed by an elected or appointed local council based at the headquarters in Omi-Aladiye. Historically, it remains an integral part of the Ijesa kingdom, which is an important Yoruba sub-group in southwestern Nigeria.
Geography and Settlements
The local government area is located in the eastern part of Osun State, characterized by a tropical climate and undulating terrain typical of the South West rainforest zone. It shares boundaries with Ilesa East to the east, Atakunmosa West to the west and south, and Obokun Local Government Area to the north. The area comprises a blend of densely populated urban wards and smaller suburban settlements that serve as transition points to the surrounding agricultural lands. Notable neighborhoods within the district include Omi-Aladiye, Ereja, and various quarters that form the western segment of Ilesa city.
Economy and Trade
The economy of Ilesa West is largely commercial, supported by its position as a major transit and trade node in Osun State. Agriculture is a secondary but vital sector, with local farmers producing cocoa, oil palm, kolanuts, and various root crops for both local consumption and export. The LGA participates in regional trade through several markets that facilitate the exchange of manufactured goods and agricultural produce. Small-scale industries, including metal works, textiles, and food processing, also contribute significantly to the local economy.
Culture and Society
The residents of Ilesa West are predominantly Ijesa people, renowned for their industrious nature and historical reputation as 'Osomaalo' traders. The culture is deeply rooted in Yoruba traditions, with the Owa Obokun Adimula of Ijesaland serving as the paramount traditional authority over the region. Major festivals, such as the Iwude Ijesa, bring the community together to celebrate their shared ancestry and cultural heritage.
