Geography and Location
Ondo East is located in the central part of Ondo State, bordered by Ondo West to the west, Idanre to the east, and Ile-Oluji/Okeigbo to the north. The landscape is characterized by a tropical rainforest climate, which supports lush vegetation and diverse biological resources. The topography is largely undulating, featuring several streams and small rivers that drain the agrarian land. Its proximity to the major urban center of Ondo City influences the socio-economic activities within the rural-urban fringe.
History and Administration
The local government was formally established in 1996 during the military regime of General Sani Abacha, when it was carved out of the old Ondo Local Government. This administrative restructuring was intended to bring development and governance closer to the people in the outlying rural communities. The headquarters is located in Bolorunduro, which acts as the primary center for local administrative services and political coordination. The area is governed through a local government council consisting of an executive chairman and several councillors representing various wards.
Economic Activities
The economy of Ondo East is heavily dependent on agriculture, which employs the vast majority of the local workforce. It is a significant producer of cash crops, most notably cocoa, which is a major export for the region, along with kola nuts and oil palm. Food crops such as cassava, yams, maize, and plantains are also cultivated extensively for both local consumption and trade. The residents of Ondo East are predominantly of the Yoruba ethnic group, specifically identifying with the Ondo sub-group and their unique dialect.
