Geography and Location
Ibesikpo Asutan is situated in the central part of Akwa Ibom State, sharing borders with Uyo, Nsit Atai, Nsit Ubium, and Etinan LGAs. The landscape is characterized by tropical rainforest vegetation and fertile soil suitable for diverse agricultural activities. Its location makes it a vital transit point for those traveling from the southern parts of the state toward the capital city. The terrain is relatively flat, facilitating the development of road networks and residential settlements.
History and Administration
The Local Government Area was formally created in 1996 during the military administration of General Sani Abacha. It was carved out of the former Uyo Local Government Area to bring governance closer to the people of the Ibesikpo and Asutan Ekpe clans. Administratively, the LGA is divided into various wards, each represented by a councilor within the local government council. The council is headed by an elected Chairman who oversees the executive functions of the area.
Economy and Commerce
The economy of Ibesikpo Asutan is primarily driven by agriculture and retail commerce. Farmers in the region specialize in the production of palm oil, cassava, yams, and local vegetables which are sold in regional markets. Nung Udoe, the administrative headquarters, functions as a significant commercial center with a large market that attracts traders from across the state.
